Accredited Distance Learning Instructions Online

By Steven Magill

The Internet has done wonders for those seeking educational credits and degrees. After all, the popularity of the internet was brought into the mainstream by the academe. The history of the Internet comes from a military background. Started as ARPANET, the Internet was designed so that in cases of war, missiles could be launched utilizing different networks if direct access to the launch protocols were destroyed.

In short, the military found a way to launch a counter attack through remote and different access sites. They built underwater cables to interconnect their different military bases so in case one base was destroyed, another base could launch weapons from the destroyed base as most weapons were kept underground and were well protected. When the educational institutions were introduced to the Internet, they utilized its network to send messages and documents to colleagues of the same disciplines in order to confer, comment and perhaps criticize each other's work. That way, when it came to formal presentations of such papers, there was less arguments and critiques about the subject matter as it had already been diligently dissected and edited through email. The idea of accessible information available on the net appealed to the academe as the reach of their academic publications which is needed as part of the requirements for doctoral programs became wider and more inexpensive. These days a lot of the publications posted by universities are accessed through the Internet. This has resulted in better and more serious work done as experts from all over the world may give their opinion enabling the author to review and edit his or her work with more scrutiny.

The other aspect in which the academe benefited from the Internet was in distance learning. Initially, there was some hesitation in offering distance learning courses and degree programs but later on, these institutions saw the value of accredited distance learning. The biggest hurdle for most universities in accepting more students to their campus was the availability of class rooms. The teaching staff and subject matter was already there regardless if there were one or a thousand students. The load factor, so to speak, depended highly on class room size. The Internet changed all of that because of its virtual characteristic and through high speed bandwidth and inexpensive digital subscribed lines these days, they could not upload lectures or even have virtual discussions with professors and students from all over the world. They were also able to make their education available to much more people than before.

Accredited distance learning is here to stay and perhaps even make a bigger mark and influence to a future society which will be so accustomed to distance learning.
